Barbara Byers is a multidisciplinary artist, performer and composer. She has written and staged two full length operas, and participated in numerous multi-media collaborative projects from San Diego to Southeast Asia. Dance has been a significant driver of her creative work since 2006, when she discovered Contemporary Dance and Contact Improvisation at Bates College. She has studied Southeast Asian dance in Java and Bali, Indonesia, and Contemporary Dance, Contact Improvisation, Alexander Technique and Authentic Movement in the San Francisco Bay Area and as part of her graduate studies at UCSD (2016-2021). Barbara finds that exploring how her body relates to space and material in creative motion often generates her best ideas, whether that’s for a creative project or simply finding insight on how she moves, and how she might be able to move more efficiently and with greater ease.
