Trochlil photographs on exhibit at RCCAC

The Randolph County Community Arts Center announces the opening reception of an exhibition of black and white photographs by Elkins resident Dick Trochlil in the Maxwell Room Gallery on Friday April 11th from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM.  This collection of Trochlil's photographs will be on exhibit through May 19th, 2008.

With negatives dating back to 1955 and a life long interest in photography, Trochlil started seriously working in a darkroom in 1967.  Living near Lake Superior at the time, he found his interest mostly lay with black and white landscape photography.  Moving to West Virginia in 1978, he found ample landscape here to keep him busy for many years.

Trochlil works in the dying art of silver gelatin photography.  Most of the photos in this exhibit are on materials no longer produced in the age of digital photography. Most of them were taken on a Mamiya 2 1Z4 for which he had four lenses:  55mm, 80mm, 105 mm, and 180mm.  One photo,  ³Moonrise over Bear Rocks,² was taken with a 4 X 5 camera.

Trochlil has exhibited regionally many times at the WV State Forest Festival, the Strawberry Festival, the annual Gala at RCCAC, and at Jacksonıs Mill.  His photos have appeared in national shows as well, including the Smithsonian Instituteıs ³Barns of America² in 1996 and the Linda McCartney Photo Exposition in 2000.  In 2006, he won ³Best of Show² at the Gala and, at the 75th Anniversary celebration of the Monongahela National Forest, one of his photos was selected as best exemplifying the landscapes of the Forest.  These award-winning photos will be part of the Trochlil Exhibit in the Maxwell Gallery at RCCAC.

The Maxwell Gallery at RCCAC was named to honor one of the founding board members of the Randolph County Community Arts Center, Judge Robert E. Maxwell. His immediate family donated the funds to decorate the room in 2002, and it has been used since as a classroom and meeting space in the Arts Center.  The Maxwell Room now serves an additional use as a solo exhibition space for RCCAC artist members.  The Trochlil exhibit will be open from 9:30 4 Monday through Friday.  Call the RCCAC office at 637-2355 for Saturday hours.
