2010 West Virginia Women in the Arts Exhibit

Winners announced
Cash prizes were awarded as winners were announced at the opening reception for the West Virginia Women in the Arts Exhibit at the Randolph County Community Arts Center on June 4. The exhibit will be open weekdays through Aug. 18.
The Best of Show prize was presented to Lorna Vincent Venter for her ceramic titled “Internal Maternal.”

First Place went to Georgia Tambasis for her mixed media drawing/painting “Love Nest.”

Laurie Goldstein-Warren received second place for her watercolor “Bass Man.”

Third Place went to Grey Darden for her watercolor titled “Evening on the River.”

The Helena Thacker Award was presented to Lauri Lydy Reidmiller for her silk painting “Symmetry I (diptych).”


Honorable Mention was awarded to Liza Brenner for her oil and latex on panel titled “Wish List”; to Jan Heath for her monoprints “Garden Goddess” and “One Small World” and her linocut “Like a Tree”; and to Lynn Payne for her oil on canvas painting titled “Sun Lady.”
Honorable Mention was also awarded to Enrica McMillon for her needle felted wool works titled “Fiddler” and “Beauty Lessens Burdens”; to Ruth Blackwell Rogers for both of her acrylic on canvas works, titled “Stream Enterers – Radiant” and “Stream Enterers – Glide”; and to Terry Lively for her oil painting “Stamus Contra Malum / We Stand Against Evil.”
Artwork featured in the exhibit
Three-dimensional artwork in the exhibit includes “Arlena,” a clay sculpture by Margo Blevin Denton, and “Young Maiden,” a terra cotta sculpture by Joan Kefover; three ceramic works by Lorna Vincent Venter, “AB-original Rain,” “Gentle Strength” and “Internal Maternal”; and two needle and felted wool sculptures by Enrica McMillon, “Beauty Lessens Burdens” and “Fiddler.”
The exhibit features fibers/textiles art including two fiber works by Suzan Morgan, “Carp Diem” and “The Meeting”; a textile work by Lisbet Okun, “The Little Blue Hat”; and a hooked rug sculpture by June Myles, “Pond Knows Nothing of the Frog's Passion.”
Oil paintings on display in the exhibit include “Little Seneca Creek” by Kadra Casseday; “Untitled Underwater” by Marcie Albee Fusco; and “Autumn Splash” and “Swimming at Chetola” by Jo Anne Jacobs.
Also included in the exhibit are the oil paintings “Stamus Contra Malum/We Stand Against Evil” by Terry Lively; “Backyard Iris's” and “Crisp & Juicy,” both by Shelby Oreolt; and “Gran Dad's Boat” and “Sun Lady,” both by Lynn Payne. Also on display is “Wish List,” an oil and latex on panel painting by Liza Brenner.
Watercolors on display include three paintings by Grey Darden, “December Sun,” “Evening on the River” and “The Clearing”; “Poppies” by Janet Rodriguez; and three by Laurie Goldstein-Warren, “Bass Man,” “Big James” and “Buckskin 7 Blue Jeans.”
Also included in the exhibit are two watercolors by Sharon Johnson, “Mail Pouch Barn” and “Morel Mushrooms”; and three watercolors by Donnell McCoy, “Dock House,” “Fall Splendor” and “River Walk.”
Other watercolors on display include two paintings by Diane Mitchell, “Boats in the Sun” and “Zinnias”; two by Betty Neely, “Blackwater Trail” and “Coral Sea”; and two by Judy Mattson Reed, “Chance Encounter” and “Mountain Meadow.”
The exhibit also includes a pair of watercolor, acrylic and gold leaf paintings by Rita J. Montrosse, “Geological Bounty” and “Jazz Be Quick.”
Included in the exhibit are two acrylic on canvas paintings by Ruth Blackwell Rogers, “Stream Enterers – Glide” and “Stream Enterers – Radiant”; as well as “Fire and Flood,” an acrylic on paper painting by Melissa May; and “The Four Winds,” an acrylic, medium and glue on wood painting by Deborah McHenry.
Other works include three silk paintings by Lauri Lydy Reidmiller, “Silent Lucidity,” “Symmetry I (diptych)” and “Symmetry II (diptych)”; an encaustic painting by Joan Kefover, “Dark Memories”; and two mixed media drawing/paintings by Georgia Tambasis, “Love Feast” and “Love Nest.”
Also included in the exhibit are “Vines,” a pen and ink on paper drawing by Marcie Albee Fusco; and “Spring Flood,” a pastel by Marjory Moses.
On display are two monoprints by Jan Heath, “Garden Goddess” and “One Small World”; a linocut by Heath, “Like a Tree”; a linoleum cut print by Maggi Rhudy, “Arts Center”; and two wood engraving prints by Rhudy, “I love to be among the very old…” and “The Dancing Ewe.”
A solo exhibit by artist Lisbet Okun will be on display in the Maxwell Room at the RCCAC concurrent with the West Virginia Women in the Arts Exhibit.

Chica Brunsvold was originally trained as an abstract expressionist painter, and has continued to paint expressionistic canvases over the course of much of her career. Currently, Brunsvold works nearly exclusively on her Zooillogicals® series.
Brunsvold received B.S. and M.A. degrees from the University of Michigan School of Art & Design, training to be an artist. After college, she served for five years as an Illustrator General with the CIA and then served for another year at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Her work is published in numerous magazines and books. She is represented by the Art League of Alexandria, VA and the Black Rock Gallery of Wintergreen, VA. Brunsvold is the recipient of the American Watercolor Society Harrison Cady Award, the Arts in Mississippi Award, and numerous others. Her work was on display with the Art in the Embassies program in Rangoon, Burma.
