Arts Center Hosts Quilt Exhibit

“Quilts, Old and New,” an exhibit featuring eleven quilts created or owned by members of the Log CabinQuilters Guild of Elkins and local residents, is on exhibit at the Randolph County Community Arts Center through March 3.  The exhibit is curated by artists Judy Van Gundy and Maggi Rhudy.

According to Judy van Gundy, Arts Center board member, volunteer and artist, “Of the eleven quilts hanging, eight of them were made by the person who loaned it. Two of the quilts are antique quilts, one purchased and one a family heirloom. The remaining quilt was purchased several years ago by the owner.”  Jill Snyder, a Long Cabin Quilters Guild member, worked with Van Gundy and the Guild members to gather quilts for the exhibit.

Van Gundy continues,  “Several of these quilts are entirely hand stitched, some are a combination of hand stitching and machine stitching and some are entirely machine stitched. They are all works of art with many, many hours of labor put into their creation.”

Maggi Rhudy, Arts Center teacher, volunteer and artist, notes, “Judy and I love color and quilts. Since Judy knows many of the quilters, she contacted the Guild and now we have a unique and colorful exhibit to share with the people of Elkins.”  Rhudy continues, “I am so thankful to Judy for organizing this and was very happy to help hang the display.”

The exhibit includes eleven quilts. The four quilts from community members include “Apple Blossom Applique” quilt, circa 1920’s, made by Ida Elizabeth Allen and owned by Judy Van Gundy;  “Dance Through Life,” pieced by Maggi Rhudy and quilted by Carol Freeman;  “Rail Fence,” circa 1950 from the Ellamore area, pieced and quilted by Mrs. Shreve and owned by Kaila St. Louis; and, “Hour Glass Quilt,” circa 1990, owned by Joyce Rossbach.

Members of the Log Cabin Quilters Guild shared seven quilts for the exhibit.  Those quilts include “A Summers Odyssey,” pieced and quilted by Kitty Lee; “Mountaineer Memories,” pieced and quilted by Fran Kordek;  “Scrapbook Quilt,” pieced and quilted by Jill Snyder;  “Baskets for Mother,” pieced by Deborah Curtis and quilted by Barbara Green; “3 Inch Nine Patch,” pieced and quilted by Joan Jackson; “Eureka,” pieced and quilted by Jane Bowers; and, “Autumn on the Dry Fork,” pieced by Sharon Pauley and quilted by Barbara Green with help from Shirley Godbold. Jill Snyder, Long Cabin Quilters Guild member, work with the Guild members to gather quilts for the exhibit.
