RCCAC Winter Class Session Begins January 4th!
The Randolph County Community Arts Center’s Winter Class Session offers a variety of classes for students of all skill levels and ages. The class session begins on Monday, January 4th and classes typically meet once a week. Those interested in registering for a class may contact the RCCAC at (304) 637-2355 or visit the office located at the corner of Randolph Avenue and Park Street in Elkins. Pre-registration and payment is required prior to attending the first class session to allow teachers to adequately prepare for their classes
Several multi-media classes are available for younger children and teens during the Winter Session.
Beth King is offering two age-appropriate sessions for a favorite multi-media Jungle Fun! class. Students will develop their visual arts skills by exploring the many colors and textures found in lizards, snakes, birds and other animals found in our world’s beautiful jungle regions. Both sessions will utilize several mediums including drawing, painting, clay, fabric batik and printmaking. The class session for children in Kindergarten through 5th Grade will meet on Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. The class session for children in 4th Grade through 8th Grade will meet on Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The fee for either class is $60.
Any child who likes to get
their hands dirty will love Susan Pell’s Hand
Building Basics for Children. This class, which is also geared
toward children in Kindergarten through 5th Grade, focuses on
developing basic hand building skills. Students will learn how to form slabs of
clay into fabulous creations of their choice. Students can choose to attend
either on Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. or on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The fee for this class is $65.
Older children who wish to develop or expand on their hand building and pottery wheel skills are welcome to sign up for Pell’s Hand and Wheel for Middle and High School Students. This class meets on Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is also $65.
Finally, Pell will offer Hand and Wheel for Adults. Beginners will learn the fundamentals of hand building and throwing on a potter’s wheel. Those with advanced skills are offered the opportunity to create independently. Interested participants can attend classes on either Tuesdays or Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The fee for this class is $65 and includes the first 25 pounds of clay and glazes.
Experienced artists who wish to practice hand modeling and sculpting techniques with a live (clothed) model are encouraged to register for the open studio Portrait Sculpture class. This 12-week class meets on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the model available between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The fee for this class is $120.
Several drawing and painting classes are also available during the Winter Session.
Older teens and adults interested in Acrylic Painting can register for Elkins artist Kevin Woodcock’s introductory class. Students will learn not only different acrylic painting techniques, but also how to prime and stretch the canvas onto frames. Artists of all skill levels are welcome to register, as instruction will be tailored to the skill level of individual participants. This class will meet on Mondays from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The fee for this class is $65.
Award-winning artist Ken Waddell will offer a Watercolor Painting Workshop that teaches the beginning and intermediate techniques most used in watercolor painting. This class meets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6th, February 3rd and March 3rd. Students may register for one class for $40 or attend all 3 classes for $100 if paid at registration.
RCCAC will also host an Open Painting Studio on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This free session provides artists with a comfortable place to paint in the Great Hall and the fellowship of other artists. Artists will need to bring all supplies including drop cloths. This is a year-round open studio.
Older teens and adults interested in developing drawing skills are encouraged to register for Elkins artist Michael Doig’s Beginning Drawing. Students will work from still life set ups, nature, architecture and the human figure with an emphasis on the structural understanding of design. The class meets on Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The fee for this class is $60.
Intermediate to advanced artists can participate in the open studio Life Drawing.
A clothed model will be available for study. Please note that supplies are not included. The fee is $45 and the open studio is available on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Two popular musical classes for teens and adults are offered by local musician Billy Kaiser. In Beginning Guitar, students will learn how to read music, play major scales and chords and have a few tunes in their repertoire by the end of the session. This class meets on Mondays from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Students enrolled in Intermediate/Advanced Guitar will refine their skills and add several tunes to their repertoire. This class meets on Mondays from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The fee for either class is $60.
LAB Band offers students an opportunity to express themselves through various musical styles in a small group setting. It is open to students in 5th Grade through 12th Grade that sing or play an instrument. This 10-week class, led by Seth Young, meets from 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. for the acoustic session and 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. for the electric session on Thursdays beginning January 7th. The fee is $80, with a nonrefundable $40 payment due at registration.
A RCCAC class session would not be complete without the opportunity to learn how to make delectable art from Chef Derrick Helzer! Treats for Your Sweet will teach older teens and adults professional intricate baking and decorating approaches just in time for Valentine’s Day! The class will meet from 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, January 23rd, January 30th, February 6th and February 13th. Students will need to bring a hand mixer, mixing bowls, measuring equipment and utensils. The fee for this class is $65.
The Randolph County Community Arts Center, a non-profit organization promoting and supporting the arts in Randolph County and the surrounding areas, is located at the corner of Randolph Avenue and Park Street in Elkins.
