About Wild and Wonderful Dance Weekend

Wild & Wonderful Weekend takes place in the Randolph County Community Arts Center during the three- day holiday celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday. All of the dances and workshops will take place in the Randolph County Community Arts Center, in the lovely Great Hall, with its wonderful oak floors and great acoustics, and in the adjoining Arts Center classroom buildings with its smaller rooms for jam sessions and workshops.

The weekend kicks off at 8 PM Friday with an evening of Cajun dancing, featuring live music, as well as a short Cajun dance workshop at 8:30, followed by dancing until 11:30.During the day on Saturday and Sunday, there will be a variety of workshops and dances. These will include waltz, contra, and partnering workshops, and a dance band workshop for musicians. There are evening dances Saturday and Sunday, and the weekend will end with a Monday morning farewell dance.

The Randolph County Community Arts Center volunteers—well known for their good cooking and Hospitality - will be offering soups, an assortment of salads, desserts and drinks for Sunday’s lunch for just $7. There will be both vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices available. Make sure you sign up for it on your registration form. Other meals are on your own. Snacks and beverages will be available during the dances. You are welcome to bring other refreshments for yourself or to share.

The cost is $90 for the entire weekend if you register by December 1st and $100 if you register after

December 1st. Admission will be limited to those who are pre-registered, due to space limitations. A small number of single-day tickets will be sold beginning December 15th if the total weekend registrations are not yet sold out. The cost is $60, due in advance, for one day, which includes that

evening’s dance. We hope to be able to offer local dancers the option of buying advance tickets for an evening dance, if there are spaces available. We are usually enrolled at full capacity, so we encourage you to register early. Please check our web site, or call ahead, to find out if there are still tickets available if you are registering after December 1st.

The Performers

The weekend will feature some of the finest bands and callers in the region. Tracy Schwarz & The Cajuneers will lead off on Friday night at 8 pm. Tracy is one of the most highly respected interpreters of music of southwest Louisiana. He will be on accordion, fiddle and vocals. In addition to Tracy, the band features Bob Smakula on fiddle, Dave Dutzik on guitar, and Kate Thomes on triangle and vocals. It's hard to imagine a finer dance floor for these masters of Cajun music! The evening will also include a Cajun dance workshop with Susan Waggoner and Rosemary Nulton who have been dancing to, and playing, Cajun music for over 10 years. Their dance instruction is designed to get you on the floor and traveling in the traditional waltz and two-step styles done in Southwest Louisiana.

On Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, the dances will feature the return of the fabulous Hotpoint Stringband from Ohio. Hotpoint is, of course, a great dance band, characterized by their own brand of sizzling hot contra-dance tunes, high energy squares, and string swing. They play an eclectic mix of original and traditional old-time and Celtic fiddle tunes. Start with the incomparable Mark Hellenberg on percussion and banjo uke. Add Nick Weiland laying down solid and tasteful bass, working closely with compelling piano from Marlene Shostak. Top it all off with monster clawhammer banjo from Hilarie Burhans and swinging, driving fiddling from Mark Burhans. It’s the recipe for a wall of rhythm, and that’s what the Hotpoint Stringband is known for. Hotpoint has three critically acclaimed recordings on the Make ‘Em Go Wooo label.

The caller for the weekend will be Gaye Fifer. Gaye is an accomplished contra caller from Charlottesville, Virginia. An active dancer herself, she understands the subtleties of making contra dances particularly satisfying for dancers. Gaye, along with Wayne Albright, will offer contra-style American folk waltz workshops. Each of them can both lead and follow, making them very effective instructors. They believe that waltzing is not just about fancy moves and twirls, but primarily about connecting with both the music and a partner.

Other musicians will also be displaying their talents this weekend and offering a variety of dance workshops and jam sessions. See our website, www.randolpharts.org, for updates.
