Children / Teen Pottery

 

Garden Party Pottery!

Tuesdays                               4:00 - 5:30    

4th - 8th grades                     $65.00

Students will celebrate summer as they create artistic pieces for their summer table and garden while learning basic hand building and wheel skills.  Students will create functional pieces including a ceramic birdhouse, a bird bath bowl, table candle lantern,  bowl for summer treats,  wind chimes, as well as more whimscial  items.

 

Gargoyles, Griffins and a Sphynx, Oh my!

Students will learn about ancient architecture and the purpose these creepy creatures had in the magnificent constructions of ancient times.  They will create clay sculptures replicating their own rendition of these creatures for their own unique purposes.  Clay handbuilding techniques such as coil, slab, score, and slip will be used to construct the clay creatures.  Glaze and acrylic paints will bring these special creatures to life!

 

Toddler Art and Music Classes

Toddlers ages 1 through 3 will explore many wonderful “ART”ventures creating art along with their parents.  Colors, shapes, textures and patterns will be explored through a variety of activities and art media, including paint, clay, collage, printmaking and more!  Students will experience creating and learning about art through a variety of activities, including songs, stories, and art inspired toys in a fun, positive, educational environment.  Activity times and projects will be age appropriate and will keep little fingers and minds engaged.  All new projects each session!

PreK ARTventures

Preschoolers ages 3 through 5 will have an “ART”venturous time creating art independently using a variety of media and techniques including collage, pottery, painting, drawing, printmaking and more.  Students will learn how to use art tools independently such as scissors, glue, paintbrushes and drawing media,  as well as learn and use the elements of art.  Students will experience creating and learning about art through a variety of activities, including songs, stories, and art inspired toys in a fun, positive, educational environment.  Activity times and projects will be age appropriate and will keep little fingers and minds engaged.  Parents are welcome to join their child in class, but are not required to attend.   All new projects each session!  Limited enrollment to 6 children.

 

Pottery

 

Pottery studio guidelines: Use of the kiln is restricted to firing works created at RCCAC for personal use.  The Community Arts Center is not to be used for commercial production firing. Tuition includes first 25 lbs of clay.  One additional bag of clay can be purchased @ $15 for 25 lbs.  This covers the costs of clay, glazes, and firing.  Students enrolled in any scheduled RCCAC pottery course may enroll in Pottery Open Studio for a 30% discount.  Open Studio time is offered during regular office hours.  Time is limited to 3 hours per week and may not interfere with regularly scheduled classes.

 

Hand and Wheel Pottery  for Adults

A creative clay experience focusing on both sculptural and functional pieces of pottery.  Students will learn the basics of throwing on the potter's wheel and slab techniques, as well as glazing and firing techniques.  Intermediate students can refine their techniques and develop existing skills.  Beginners are welcome.  Limited enrollment of six.

 

Hand and Wheel Pottery for Adults

Beginning students can learn the fundamentals of hand building and throwing on the potter’s wheel, including centering, raising the wall, thinning, shaping, and trimming.  Intermediate students will refine their throwing and building skills and learn new finishing techniques to bring their pottery to a higher level.  Experienced pottery students will have the opportunity to create independently. First 25 pounds of clay and glazes included in cost. One  additional 25 pounds of clay/glazes $15.  Limited enrollment of 6.

 

 

 

Drawing

 

Drawing Fundamentals

Students will learn the various expressive qualities of line and learn to control lines in rendering realistic images.  Students will learn to model their drawings in a variety of ways.  Students will learn to see subjects in terms of light and shadow and use the materials through the full range of darks and lights. 

 

Life Drawing

A wonderful opportunity to draw from a clothed model and enjoy the company and support of fellow artists.  Supplies not included. All  artists welcomed!

 

Painting

 

Basic Oil Painting

Thursdays                              6:00 - 7:30

Teacher: Bill McWhorter

 

Students will learn the old school craft of oil painting.  Students will start with the basics:  stretching a canvas; learning about the materials; organizing the palette; color mixing; brush techniques; and, using the palette knife.  Students will complete a painting using techniques of oil paint after gaining understanding of fundamentals of the craft.

 

Waterolor Workshops

Wednesdays, August 6, 13 and 20                         9:30 - 12:30  

Adults             $30 each or  $80 for all three (paid in advance)

Teacher: Ken Waddell

 

This course offers beginning and intermediate techniques in watercolor painting.  Basic techniques will be covered, such as using brushes, paint and papers, as well as color mixing and composition.  Learn to choose and use colors effectively, build a strong foundation of lights and darks, and use a variety of application techniques.  Students will participate in critiques of composition and design in addition to principles of basic craftsmanship.

 

Music

 

Blues Music Jam

Mondays                                6:00 - 7:30

A study of the musical language of the blues.  Focus will be on the ability to play in an ensemble while learning the basics of the blues.  Students will study and play various styles of blues with the goals of  improving instrumental techniques, learning new chords and riffs, and performing.  Students must have their own playable instrument.
