Children's Multimedia Arts Classes
Marvelous Multimedia!
Wednesdays 4:00 - 5:00
Kindergarten - fifth grades $50.00

Students will create a multitude of multimedia art projects in this class! Painting, printmaking, sculpture, oil pastels, collage, and drawing media will be used to create marvelous artwork using the elements of art. Projects will be theme-oriented using art history, nature, pop culture, world history, and children’s books. Students will learn how to use art techniques to improve and build on their visual art skills, as well as develop their creativity. All new projects each session!
Asian Art

5 week session
Journey to the world's largest continent and experience the art and cultures of the many regions of Asia! Students will use a variety of media and processes to create projects focusing on the people, customs, and cultures of this wonderful continent. Ikebana, Oragami, Haikus, Kirigami, and more will be accompanied by Asian music and a few tasty treats to round out this five-week investigation!

Hand and Wheel Pottery for Young Adults

Students will experience a studio setting while learning the basics of throwing on the potter's wheel and handbuilding with slabs, coils, and press molds. Students will use their skills to create practical objects like mugs and dishes or more whimsical sculptures. Glazing techniques will include colorful slips and underglazes. Limited enrollment of five.
Toddler's Art and Music Classes

5 week session that begins the first week of May
Give your child something to talk about in his or her own backyard. Be the flower from the "seed's perspective." Run and jump in rain puddles made from hula hoops. Snack on whole wheat mini-waffles dipped in honey, just like a real honeycomb. Shoo real flies and sing "Shoo Fly." Creatures In My Backyard includes delightfully engaging music, movement activities, and develops in these young children the ability to stay focused for the hour long lesson by sharing, taking turns, listening, singing and moving.

Toddlers ages 1 through 3 will explore many wonderful “ART”ventures creating art along with their parents. Colors, shapes, textures, and patterns will be explored through a variety of activities and art media, including paint, clay, collage, printmaking and more! Students will experience creating and learning about art through a variety of activities, including songs, stories, and art-inspired toys in a fun, positive, educational environment. Activity times and projects will be age appropriate and will keep little fingers and minds engaged. All new projects each session!
PreK ARTventures

Preschoolers ages 3 through 5 will have an “ART”venturous time creating art independently using a variety of media and techniques including collage, pottery, painting, drawing, printmaking and more. Learning how to use art tools independently such as scissors, glue, paintbrushes, and drawing media will be focused on, as well as learning and using the elements of art. Students will experience creating and learning about art through a variety of activities, including songs, stories, and art inspired toys in a fun, positive, educational environment. Activity times and projects will be age appropriate and will keep little fingers and minds engaged. Parents are welcome to join their child in class, but are not required to attend. All new projects each session! Limited enrollment to 6 children.

Drawing Basics

Learn how to see what you’re drawing, and draw what you see. Learn how to control the hand and coordinate with your eyes for drawing. Students will learn and practice drawing with particular attention to the light and shadow and learn techniques for improving and developing skills of drawing. Students will draw with crayon, charcoal, pencil, erasers, and other tools to create satisfying images.

Painting
Imaginary Journey: Story Scroll Workshop

Students will study Asian Scroll Paintings that depict travels, adventures, or everyday events. Students are led on an imaginary visual journey and then watch a demonstration of painting. Students create their own "Imaginary Journey" Scroll, expressing the images and feelings they had during the visualization.
Watercolor Workshop with Kay Gillispie

Discover or rediscover the joys of paint and water as you explore the wonderful medium of watercolor. Covers basic techniques such as using brushes, paint, and papers as well as color mixing and composition. Learn to choose and use colors effectively, build a strong foundation of lights and darks, and use a variety of application techniques. Continuing students will refine and continue to develop their acquired skills. Level of instruction will be individually tailored to meet student needs.

Students will learn the basic pattern to make a ribbed basket. This is a sturdy all purpose basket design which can be both utilitarian and decorative. Henderson learned this pattern while studying with basket maker Rachel Nash Law. Participants are invited to bring a potluck dish for the Saturday lunch.
Bark Basket Class

Students will have the opportunity to use locally harvested bark to create a sturdy bark basket with local basket maker Leslie Henderson. Participants are invited to bring a potluck dish for lunch.
Printmaking
Home Sweet Home: A Printmaking Workshop

Join printmaker Kadra Kramer for a printmaking workshop. Students are invited to bring an image of their home or other favorite buidling to use as the subject for their linocut, sized for use on personal stationary. Students will make several Artist Proofs of their linocut(s). Bring a sack lunch.
Pottery
Pottery studio guidelines: Use of the kiln is restricted to firing works created at RCCAC for personal use. The Community Arts Center is not to be used for commercial production firing. Tuition includes first 25 lbs of clay. One additional bag of clay can be purchased @ $15 for 25 lbs. This covers the costs of clay, glazes, and firing. Students enrolled in any scheduled RCCAC pottery course may enroll in Pottery Open Studio for a 30% discount. Open Studio time is offered during regular office hours. Time is limited to 3 hours per week and may not interfere with regularly scheduled classes.

Music
Blues Music Jam

A study of the musical language of the blues. Focus will be on the ability to play in an ensemble while learning the basics of the blues. Students will study and play various styles of blues with the goals of improving instrumental techniques, learning new chords and riffs, and performing. Students must have their own playable instrument.
Lap Dulcimer - An Introduction to a Mountain Tradition

Teacher: Luanna Moore
Join Luanna Moore for an introduction to the lap dulcimer, one of the simplest string instruments to learn to play. Students will learn basic strummng, how to tune a dulcimer, basic chords for accompanient in groups as well as several simple tunes. No musical experience is required and students do not need to be able to read music.
